Drawn from our love for time-honoured craftsmanship, the Freya dress celebrates the traditional arts of handloom weaving and embroidery. Combining beautifully woven plaid-patterned fabric with embroidered paneling on the front and back around the neckline,  Freya features a classic vintage shift-dress cut with the addition of sweet billowed sleeves with cuff ties, pockets, and an optional waist belt providing versatility to the shape. Crafted in the most delightful hues of Honeycomb Plaid, this “cute as a button” design brings a vivacious flair of originality to your wardrobe.

Material

100% Handloom Cotton.

Garment Care

Gentle, cold water hand wash using natural detergents, and hang drying in the shade. Handcrafted garments are delicate, however, designed to last when treated mindfully with love and care.

Ethically handmade with love in India. This garment serves to support the preservation of traditional handloom weaving in the small village of Manamedu.

100% Handloom Cotton

Depending on each individual, some find the material sheer. A slip may be worn underneath if desired.

HANDLOOMED IN INDIA

At Daughters of India, hand-looming begins long before weaving ever starts. Artisans in the village of Manamedu prepare yarn by selecting fibres, cleaning, carding, spinning, and winding it onto spools to create strong, durable thread suitable for weaving. The yarns are then stretched, sized with natural starch for strength and lubrication, dried, and methodically wound around a wooden beam before being installed on a traditional loom.

Setting up a handloom is itself a complex, multi-day task; once ready, weavers manually weave the threads with precision and skill to create tightly woven fabric. This entire process is slow, sustainable, powered by daylight rather than electricity, and rooted in skills passed down through generations, taking many weeks or months to complete even a single batch of fabric.

Empowering women

At the heart of Daughters of India, we believe supporting women to feel empowered is a key component of a positive future.

We have pledged an ongoing monthly donation of $10,000 to support our charity partnerships Sewing the Seeds and Saheli Women.

Sewing the seeds

Sewing the Seeds is a women’s empowerment initiative that uses education and creativity in slow fashion to help break the cycle of poverty for Indian women. Their centre offers training in business, finance, and women’s health, fostering self-confidence in a supportive environment.

We have committed to a monthly donation of $5,000 to support their impactful work.

Saheli Women

We’re working with Saheli women to launch Saheli Kapas, a Cotton Project, to support and empower female farmers at the root of the supply chain. Saheli Women believe true fashion starts with the Earth and the women who nurture and farm it.

The pilot begins with five women and their farms, providing them with training, direct income, and ongoing support. By offering access to quality seeds and low-water sustainable practices, we aim to uplift communities while honouring Mother Earth.

We have committed to a monthly donation of $5,000 to support their impactful work.
